Watch these two presentations of a monologue from “Fences.” These are two of the greatest American actors around today, doing completely different takes on the same monologue from a multiple Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which became a hit movie. Ignore the fact that the audience is more vocal during Denzel Washington’s presentation. That was filmed during an actual performance.
Two versions of Troy:
1. James Earl Jones, original Broadway production of “Fences,” 1987: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_kGtQmvrVI
2. Denzel Washington, Broadway revival of “Fences,” 2010
In both versions, what do you think Troy wants his son to learn/to know? How do these two actors approach the same goal in a different way?
